Profile
Alonzo Carter was named Sacramento State’s 14th head coach on Dec. 15, 2025 after serving as the assistant head coach and running backs coach at the University of Arizona in 2024. Carter spent nine seasons on staffs under Brett Brennan at San Jose State, joining the Spartans as running backs coach in January 2017 and adding assistant head coach duties in 2021. As Contra Costa College head coach from 2010-16 he went 47-27, won four conference titles and captured two Living Breath Foundation Bowl victories. Carter owns a 129-69-3 overall head coaching record across high school, junior college and college stops.
Coaching Approach
Recruiting-focused with Northern California roots and running-back development: produced SJSU 2023 RB Kairee Robinson (1,194 yards, 18 rushing TDs) and Arizona’s 2024 rushing unit (2,143 yards, led by Ismail Mahdi’s 826 yards) while earning regional recruiting awards including 247Sports Mountain West Recruiter of the Year (2019).
