Named the fourth head coach in Georgia State history on Feb. 23, 2024, McGee led Georgia State to a 36-32 upset over Vanderbilt in his first season and signed a 29-player 2025 class that was the largest in program history and the highest-rated Sun Belt signing class per 247Sports. McGee spent eight seasons on staff at Georgia where he served as running backs coach and run game coordinator and helped the Bulldogs capture back-to-back College Football Playoff national championships in 2021 and 2022 while coaching four 1,000-yard rushers during his UGA tenure.
