Dowell Loggains was named Appalachian State’s head coach on Dec. 7, 2024 after more than 17 years in the NFL and recent college offensive coordinator work, including at South Carolina. His first season as App State head coach produced a 34-11 road win in his debut and a Birmingham Bowl appearance; he also oversaw the program signing the highest-rated recruiting class in Sun Belt history. Loggains combines pro-level quarterback coaching with college recruiting experience and tight ends coaching at his alma mater.

Coaching Approach

Adopts an NFL-influenced offensive scheme that emphasizes quarterback development, third-down creativity and a complementary rushing attack. Loggains pairs detailed, pro-style quarterback coaching with aggressive use of running backs and tight ends and prioritizes recruiting relationships to accelerate roster upgrades and sustained offensive production.
